The penultimate commemorative issue marking the centenary of The Great War comprises six 1st class stamps bearing evocative images exploring six key themes that have run through this commemorative series.
For the fourth stamp issue of five commemorating the centenary of The Great War, six key themes are explored and include Poppies, Poetry, War Art, Memorials and Artefacts. This issue features a shattered poppy, a quotation from ‘Dead man’s Dump’ by Isaac Rosenberg, nurses Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm, ‘Dry Docked for Scaling and Painting’ by Edward Wadsworth, Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium and the Bible which saved the life of Private Lemuel Rees by deflecting an enemy bullet.
Our BLCS 5000 cover features an image of HMS Kilbride painted in what was known as dazzle camouflage, which consisted of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, designed to break up the outlines of the ship at sea and confuse the enemy. The cover bears a Portsmouth pictorial cancellation for the dockyard and naval base which played an important role in the conflict.
